pioneers of change

from the 4th of September until the 14th of September, Pascale Gatzen, Sarah Stolwijk and students of IDC Fashion will be collaborating with Painted, a Dutch fashion collective, 3 generations of Native American bead masters and NY based lace makers, in a house on
Governors Island as part of the manifestation 'Pioneers of Change', curated by Renny Ramakers of Droog Design, to celebrate the arrival of Henry Hudson in Manhattan 400 years ago.
Painted is Margreet Sweerts, Desiree Hammen and my good friend Saskia van Drimmelen.
Nightwood will furnish the house.
We consider the house as a present and our gift to the house is our work.

Between Everything and Nothing

Last Friday, IDC Sophomore group Between Everything and Nothing launched their first zine, DEFORMITY AS IDENTITY. The show at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn was really impressive, featuring a live DJ, plenty of art from IDC students, and a live fashion installation.

Trees at Night

Susan Cianciolo's Fall/Winter 2009 collection presentation was held last Sunday at the Tela Design Studio. This season Susan dazzled New York with an array of multifaceted, uniquely unusual, poetic and sustainable garments. Each piece is decidedly meant to be savored by the eyes and cherished by the wearer, as well as being very personal, with one-of-a-kind fabrics, drawings and hand-stitches interwoven into each piece. The ambiance at the Tela Design Studio was one of light-hearted airiness as well as being whimsical and dream-like. A pianist played tunes softly in the background while the models thoughtfully meandered in figure-eights as they contemplated their unfamiliar surroundings. Hung around the presentation room were drawings and artworks by the designer, which, together with the music and Susan Cianciolo-clad models, made for an exquisite juxtapostion of fashion and art conjoined into one space.

Sasha Duerr of the Permacouture Institute, and Bay Area Slow Food culinary artist Leif Hedendal of the Secret Cafe collaborated on a unique event highlighting the multiple uses of plants as a means of creating awareness about sustainable fashion and food. The event started with a class on natural fibers and dyes, and was then followed by an incredible meal that used many of the same natural ingredients.
